"On the way back from Korea, I was on the Lake Champlain aircraft carrier, when we stopped in Hong Kong and went on liberty. My two friends, Frankie and Bon and I got back about three hours late to the ship and decided to dive off the accommodation platform into the bay of Hong Kong. The deck watch saw us and sounded "man overboard" at about 3 a.m., waking up about 3,000 sailors."

"Prior to Vietnam, we knew from human intelligence that the SAM-2 missile was being put into service but didn't know anything about it. Stationed in Japan, I spent a lot of time going near the Russian coast, trying to get them to bring up the radar that worked the system. Finally, after getting closer and closer, we found out all the radar's parameters and then were able to develop what defense there was available to us."
