honor our local veterans Imes, Robert "Bob" M. "My most memorable moment was July 27, 1953, two days before my 20th birthday, when the armistice was signed in Korea and the fighting was over. What a neat birthday present for me." Iratcabal, Michael E. "My most memorable moment is the day I returned to Germany from Desert Shield and Storm with the 1st Armored Division and cried." Jensen, Nikolaos W. "Most memorable are my experiences traveling the world and meeting the most honorable people I will ever know." Jervey, Jim P. "On the way back from Korea, I was on the Lake Champlain aircraft carrier, when we stopped in Hong Kong and went on liberty. My two friends, Frankie and Bon and I got back about three hours late to the ship and decided to dive off the accommodation platform into the bay of Hong Kong. The deck watch saw us and sounded "man overboard" at about 3 a.m., waking up about 3,000 sailors." Kerr, Bill "My most memorable moment is when I had my leg blown off on Okinawa and they sewed it back on." Koelling Richard "Dick" W. "My most memorable moment is landing, in one of our aircraft, on the ice in Christ Church, New Zealand, where I spent a month in command of the Air Force Detachment that was supporting Operation Deep Freeze." Koontz, Charles "Charlie" "We were on our way to invade Japan when they surrendered. It was thrilling and very memorable." Kuckoff, F. Albert "Al" "As an infantry man, already on his way to the Pacific to invade Japan, the news of Japan's surrender was infinitely the best news of all time for me. It meant that I was likely to live awhile longer. And so I have." Leach, M. Roger "Most memorable are participating in support of a conference the President of the United States convened in Geneva, Switzerland, for the purpose of preventing a surprise attack on Western Powers; being deployed to New Delhi, India, to support the Indian government in its fight against the Chinese Communists attacking the northern borders of their country; and the evacuation of personnel from the previous Leopoldville, Belgian Congo, more recently referred to as Kinshasa, Zaire." Linderman, Samuel "Sam" W. "Prior to Vietnam, we knew from human intelligence that the SAM-2 missile was being put into service but didn't know anything about it. Stationed in Japan, I spent a lot of time going near the Russian coast, trying to get them to bring up the radar that worked the system. Finally, after getting closer and closer, we found out all the radar's parameters and then were able to develop what defense there was available to us." |
